A Tribute to Tides

Where the rivers meet the sea

Taipei is a city with rivers. However, urban development has often caused the city residents to neglect the rivers flowing around us, let alone remembering that rivers and ocean are interdependent. Tamsui River system, the mother river of Taipei, is in fact the biggest “tidal river” in Taiwan. The tidal reach contains the mixture of river water and seawater; its salinity levels and flows are influenced by the tides. As the tide rises and falls, an abundant and complex ecosystem is born at where the river meets the sea.

Feel the movements of tides, appreciate the richness they bring

“A Tribute to Tides” is our theme of the year. The 2015 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival wishes to invite artists and public to appreciate the tidal force in estuaries which support a great diversity of life. The Festival explores how all things live harmoniously with the rhythm of the tides, recalls how people coexist with tides and water throughout history, and reflects how we benefit from the river's bounty and then, how we abuse it. These artworks hope to once again inspire us to rethink about our relationship with nature in a city, to feel the tidal pulse, and to express our gratitude to the tides which has brought so much the richness to the estuaries.
